Job Description The newly created Office of Sustainability is looking for passionate and proactive student employees to support Bryn Mawr College’s mission to promote sustainability, climate action, and environmental stewardship. Student employees will work collaboratively with the Director of Sustainability and Environmental Action and get hands-on experience driving sustainability initiatives, conducting audits and research, and engaging the campus community in sustainable practices. This is an ideal opportunity for students eager to make a tangible impact, while developing valuable professional skills. General Responsibilities and Expectations: - Be knowledgeable about BMC’s sustainability efforts, and UN Sustainable Development Goals, and be prepared to answer questions and participate in dialogue on these topics. - Attend weekly sustainability team meetings, and bi-weekly 1:1 meetings with the Director of Sustainability. - Work collaboratively with other team members to accomplish tasks. - Monitor communications channels (social media/email) to answer questions and keep people informed about departmental activities, with assistance from other team members. - Ability to handle multiple, and sometimes shifting, priorities at once.
Job Requirements There are three opportunities within the department. While the three interns will work together as a team, each person will have specialized roles and responsibilities as described below: Community Engagement Intern: This position will oversee the department’s campus engagement efforts, particularly during Campus Sustainability Month (October) and Earth Month (April). This position requires someone who enjoys planning events and programs to inform and educate the campus community about sustainability initiatives. Tasks include: - Designing and implementing educational programs for the BMC student body to engage them in sustainability efforts. - Programs may be conducted in partnership with campus stakeholders (including student clubs). - Keeping tracking of sustainability-related programs offered by other departments on campus. - Programs must include measurable goals and outcomes. Post-program reports should include information such as - Program pro’s and con’s - What did attendees learn? - Number of students engaged - Create or request digital designs to advertise events and programs, post flyers around campus as appropriate - At the end of the academic year, a report should include the unique number of students engaged during the course of the school year. STARS Intern: This position will be responsible for supporting data collection, analysis, and reporting related to the Sustainability Tracking, Assessment, and Rating System (STARS) report. This role requires someone who is meticulous with details, and enjoys analyzing and interpreting data. Tasks include: - Convening with the STARS working group on at least a monthly basis - Capturing meeting notes, and creating them into action items using the Asana project management software. - Analyzing data from a variety of sources on campus – such as the registrar’s office, facilities office, civic engagement office, etc. and inputting it into the STARS software. - Using the SIMAP software to update BMC’s greenhouse gas inventory and calculate annual emissions. - Identifying areas of improvement in a timely manner and suggesting pathways for implementation. - Researching sustainability practices at other institutions and offering ways to implement similar programs at BMC. Operations Intern: This position will be responsible for supporting special projects related to sustainability operations for the campus community. One main area of focus for the AY25-26 year is materials management. This role requires someone who is passionate about waste reduction and diversion. This position is a mix of office work and campus work. Tasks include: - Being knowledgeable about current recycling, composting and other waste management practices at BMC and answer general inquiries about this to campus stakeholders. - Conduct an audit of hydration stations on campus, and offer suggestions to replace existing stations or identify opportunities for installing new stations. This is a first step towards a larger project to reduce single-use packaging waste on campus, starting with packaged water. - Conduct an audit of all the waste bins on campus and offer suggestions to replace old bins. - Conduct waste audits and identifying best practices related to waste reduction and diversion. - Piloting waste reduction projects for the AY25-26. This includes offering additional composting pilot programs. - Support the designing of new landfill/recycling/compost signage and ensure proper placement of signage on bins. - Other areas of operations could include carbon emissions calculation, evaluating cost/benefit of different climate solutions, researching best practices related to operations at other institutions, etc.
