Job Description The objective of this PAID 5-week seminar is to earn $ while answering: Who are the key players in the financial ecosystem and what are their drivers? What are the ways in which for-profit and not-for-profit entities fund themselves? How can finance help/hinder social change? How is technology shifting current paradigms? There are 3 main learning goals for this seminar: - Increase familiarity with key terms and tools - Apply a financial lens to current events - Develop the muscle to recognize and analyze financial impetuses and barriers to social change Finance plays a role in most decisions we make – from the most mundane, “what do I wear today” to life-changing ones such as “what college should I attend.” A career in consulting, law, banking, or asset management requires varying degrees of financial literacy. Even if we eschew the world of money, it is important to understand the dynamics that shape it and the paradigms in place. This knowledge arms us to attain our goals, e.g. to build personal wealth, promote decarbonization, or improve gender equity. Taught by BMC alumna, Amberine Nagree, an accomplished financial services executive with >20yrs experience. Amberine has worked for an investment bank, asset manager and a fintech startup. Students will meet 1x/week for 6 wks. Sessions last 2 hours and will typically require 2 hours of (paid) prep including reading newspaper articles, following current events, podcasts and projects. Explore the history of finance, understand who key players are in the ecosystem and establish key concepts such as leverage, balance sheets and the different types of financial instruments. We will then leverage case studies and current events to explore the intersection of finance with various subjects such as climate change, gender equity, and government initiatives such as US Housing policy. We will evaluate approaches being taken by governments, corporates and nonprofit institutions. By the end of the intensive, students will be able to use these paradigms to further their own goals.
