Job Description The Research Assistant (RA) will support Dr. Cindy Sousa with project management and research tasks for multiple projects on the topics of stress, violence, displacement, health, and resilience, with a particular focus on parenting and families within disasters (including political violence, community violence, and climate change). PhD students with interest in stress and coping, especially related to child and family well-being in the face of adversities, are encouraged to apply. Some activities will be logistical support, not necessarily leading to publications, though there might be some opportunities for co-authorship as well. Activities include project management, conducting subject matter literature reviews, assisting with IRB and grant applications, data entry and cleaning, coding qualitative data, analyzing research data (both qualitative and quantitative), using programs such as SPSS, MPlus, Dedoose, and Atlas Ti, and participating in the writing of research findings for publication. The tasks and hours will vary depending on the project, but will likely average about 5 hours a week.
Job Requirements Candidate must have a MSW or equivalent and be a current doctoral student on our GSSWSR. Knowledge of or interest in violence and resilience, international health and mixed methods research is strongly encouraged in a candidate. Candidate must be comfortable with computers and utilizing the latest software analysis packages, as evidenced by the ability to specify which software and/or analysis package(s) with which they are most comfortable (i.e., Excel, word, SPSS, and/or qualitative programs). Candidate MUST be detailed in their approach to work, have proficiency in managing multiple tasks at once, be comfortable working in a non-linear environment, and able to provide examples of approach to project implementation. Candidate must be a self-starter, interested in the project topic, professionally mature, and should have an interest in and demonstrated ability to complete tasks supporting research projects in a timely manner. Other skills include: project management; academic research and writing; and conducting quantitative and qualitative research projects (as evidenced by the ability to discuss aspects or steps in a research process in which they found particular satisfaction). Highly desired: proven competence in conducting literature reviews, accessing and searching databases, and enjoy writing utilizing APA format.
