Job Description The BMC Community Summer Garden Coordinator will work to physically maintain the community garden on campus located next to the New Dorm Dining Hall. The Coordinator will promote student, staff and faculty involvement in the garden through recruitment and coordination of volunteers. The coordinator will also meet regularly with the head of BMC Grounds to coordinate support for the Community Garden. Job Responsibilities The BMC Community Garden Coordinator will: • Maintain the garden by planting seedlings, weeding, harvesting produce, restocking supplies, caring for gardening tools, watering and maintaining the health of soil and immediate health of garden • Recruit, coordinate, and manage volunteers (including students, faculty and staff) who will assist the Coordinator in maintaining the garden • Facilitate the distribution of the produce harvested from the gardens; • Manage social media and outreach efforts to promote the garden and garden-related activities to the campus community; • Maintain relationships with campus garden stakeholders (New Dorm Dining Hall, BMC Grounds, the Post Bac students, Sustainability Leadership Group, etc.); • Link community service events to the campus community garden when possible, working with both on and off campus service groups; • Search for opportunities to increase the visibility and impact of the community gardens; and • Engage the larger campus community around related social justice issues (food, environmentalism, etc.) • Meet regularly throughout the summer for supervision with Civic Engagement staff supervisor. • Meet regularly with the head of BMC Grounds and coordinate the physical and material support provided by BMC Grounds
Job Requirements • Ability to work well independently • Previous experience managing others/recruiting volunteers • Previous experience working in a garden The BMC Community Summer Garden Coordinator’s hours will vary from week to week depending on the work load, but should plan to dedicate 8 – 12 hours per week to this position. The BMC Community Summer Garden Coordinator will report directly to Civic Engagement. The Coordinator is expected to fill the position from the end of May through the end of August.
